Riyadh to Jeddah: The Basics

Riyadh and Jeddah sit on opposite sides of the Kingdom, so this is one of the longest intercity journeys most travellers in Saudi Arabia make by road.

  • Road distance: roughly 950 to 1,000 km, depending on where you start in Riyadh and where you stay in Jeddah.
  • Driving time: around 9 to 10 hours without long stops. With prayer, meal and rest breaks, plan for 10 to 12 hours.
  • Main route: the highway west from Riyadh through the Taif area, then down towards Makkah and Jeddah.

Car or Flight?

Flights between Riyadh and Jeddah are short, so why do many people still choose the car?

Private car

  • Door to door: Yes, from your home or hotel in Riyadh to your address in Jeddah
  • Luggage: All your bags travel with you, no weight limits from an airline
  • Timing: You choose the departure time
  • Stops: Stop for prayer, food or rest when you want
  • Best for: Families, groups, elderly travellers, lots of luggage, Umrah via Makkah

Flight

  • Door to door: No, airport to airport, plus transfers at both ends
  • Luggage: Baggage allowance and check-in
  • Timing: Fixed flight times, check-in and security queues
  • Stops: No stops
  • Best for: Solo travellers in a hurry with light bags

Once you add the trip to the airport, check-in, waiting and the transfer in Jeddah, a flight takes a good part of the day too. For a family of five with suitcases, one comfortable car from door to door is often the simpler choice.

Planning Your Trip From Riyadh to Jeddah by Car

Start Early

Most travellers leave early in the morning, so they reach Jeddah in the evening. Leaving early also means most of the drive happens in daylight, which is more comfortable for children and older passengers.

Plan Two or Three Stops

The highway has petrol stations with places to pray, eat and use the restrooms. Two or three short stops make a long journey much easier. With a private car, you decide when and where to stop.

Travelling for Umrah?

If you are going to Makkah for Umrah on the way, remember that travellers coming from the Riyadh direction pass the miqat at Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sayl Al-Kabir) near Taif. Many pilgrims enter ihram there. Tell us when you book, so your driver plans the stop and the route through Makkah.

Pack a Travel Bag

Keep water, snacks, medicines, phone chargers and anything you need for prayer in a small bag inside the car, so you do not have to open your suitcases on the way.

Which Vehicle Do You Need?

Group size Suggested vehicle
1 to 3 passengers Mercedes S-Class or similar luxury sedan
Family with luggage GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Suburban or Cadillac Escalade
Small group Mercedes V-Class
Mid-size group Mercedes Sprinter
Large group Coaster bus or full-size coach

On a 10-hour drive, space matters. For a family with several suitcases, an SUV is usually more comfortable than a sedan. Tell us the number of passengers and bags, and we will confirm the right size. See our fleet for details.
