Makkah to Madinah: The Basics

After Umrah, most pilgrims continue to Madinah to pray at Masjid an-Nabawi. The journey from Makkah to Madinah by car is one of the most travelled routes in Saudi Arabia, and with a little planning it is an easy and comfortable day.

  • Road distance: roughly 420 to 450 km, depending on your hotel in each city.
  • Driving time: around 4 to 5 hours without long stops. With prayer and rest breaks, plan for 5 to 6 hours.
  • Main road: the Makkah–Madinah highway (Highway 15, also known as the Hijrah road), a wide, modern highway with petrol stations and rest areas along the way.

Car or Train?

The Haramain High-Speed Railway also connects Makkah and Madinah, and the train ride is shorter than the drive. So why do so many families still travel by car?

Private car

  • Door to door: Yes, hotel to hotel
  • Luggage: All your bags travel with you in the car
  • Timing: You choose the departure time
  • Stops: Stop for prayer, food or rest when you want
  • Best for: Families, elderly travellers, groups, lots of luggage

Haramain train

  • Door to door: No, station to station
  • Luggage: You carry your bags through both stations
  • Timing: Fixed timetable, can sell out in busy seasons
  • Stops: No stops
  • Best for: Light travellers

If you travel with elderly parents, young children, a wheelchair or many suitcases, the door-to-door journey by car is usually far easier. Check the official Haramain timetable if you prefer the train.

Planning Your Trip From Makkah to Madinah by Car

Choose the Right Time to Leave

Many travellers leave in the morning after breakfast, so they arrive in Madinah in the afternoon with time to rest before Maghrib. Leaving straight after a late night at the Haram can make the drive tiring for children and older passengers. Avoid leaving on a busy Friday around Jumu’ah if you can.

Check Out on Time

Hotels near the Haram often have busy lobbies at check-out time. Ask your driver to meet you at the hotel entrance at an agreed time, and have your luggage ready in the lobby a few minutes before.

Plan Your Stops

The road has regular petrol stations with places to pray, eat and use the restrooms. One or two short stops make the journey much more comfortable, especially for families. With a private car, you decide when to stop.

Pack Smart

Keep water, snacks, medicines and anything you need for prayer in a small bag inside the car, so you do not have to open your suitcases on the way.
