Where You Land: King Abdulaziz International Airport

Most international visitors heading to Makkah arrive at King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) in the north of Jeddah. It is the main air gateway for Umrah and Hajj travellers, as Makkah itself has no airport.

Because the airport sits in the north of the city, the trip from Jeddah airport to Makkah is a little longer than a trip from central Jeddah. Expect a road distance of roughly 100 to 115 km to central Makkah, depending on your terminal and where your hotel is.

How Long Does the Drive Take?

By car, the drive usually takes around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. The main factors are:

  • Time of day: evenings and the hours before Friday prayers are busier.
  • Season: Ramadan, school holidays and the Hajj season bring much heavier traffic, especially near the Haram.
  • Your hotel location: hotels close to Masjid al-Haram can take longer to reach because of road closures and pedestrian areas around the Haram.
  • Airport formalities: immigration and baggage claim can take anything from 30 minutes to a couple of hours at busy times, so plan your pickup around your landing time.

Your Options From Jeddah Airport to Makkah

1

Haramain High-Speed Railway

The Haramain train has a station at the airport and links it to Makkah. The train ride itself is fast, under an hour, but you still need to get from the Makkah train station to your hotel, and you will be handling your own luggage on the way. Check the official Haramain timetable before you travel, as schedules change and trains can sell out in peak seasons.

Good for: solo travellers or couples with light luggage.

2

Taxi or Ride-Hailing App

Taxis and app-based rides are available at the airport. They can work well for a quick trip, but vehicle size and comfort vary, and finding a large enough car for a family with several suitcases is not always easy at busy times.

Good for: small groups who are flexible on vehicle type.

3

Private Chauffeur Transfer

A private transfer means a driver meets you at arrivals and takes you directly to your hotel door in Makkah. You choose the vehicle size before you travel, so there is space for everyone and all your luggage.

Good for: families, elderly travellers, VIP guests, corporate delegations and Umrah groups.

Why Many Pilgrims Choose a Private Transfer

After a long flight, the last thing most travellers want is to look for a car with enough space or carry bags through a train station. With a private transfer from Talin Transportation:

  • Meet & greet: your driver waits in the arrivals hall with your name.
  • Flight tracking: if your flight lands early or late, the pickup time moves with it.
  • 30 minutes of free waiting after landing, so immigration and baggage claim are not a worry.
  • The right vehicle: a Mercedes S-Class or GMC Yukon for VIP guests and families, a Mercedes V-Class or Sprinter for groups, and coaches for large Umrah groups.
  • Door to door: straight from the terminal to your hotel in Makkah, with no change of vehicle.

Important Things to Know Before You Travel

Ihram and the Miqat

If you are travelling for Umrah, you need to be in ihram before you pass the Miqat. For travellers flying into Jeddah, the Miqat is usually crossed in the air before landing, so most pilgrims put on ihram before or during the flight. Follow the guidance of your scholar or Umrah agent on this.

Entry to Makkah

Entry to the city of Makkah is for Muslims only, and there are checkpoints on the roads into the city. Non-Muslim travellers in your group should plan to stay in Jeddah.

Share the Right Details When You Book

To make your pickup smooth, send your transport company:

  • Flight number and arrival date
  • Number of passengers and number of suitcases
  • Hotel name in Makkah
  • Any special needs, such as a wheelchair or child seats

Travelling Back From Makkah to the Airport

For your return trip, leave plenty of time. Roads near the Haram can be slow, and international flights usually need you at the airport around three hours before departure. Many travellers book the return transfer at the same time as the arrival transfer. See our Makkah to Jeddah transportation page for details.

Continuing to Madinah?

Many pilgrims visit Madinah after Makkah. The road trip takes around 4 to 5 hours. Read our Makkah to Madinah transportation page to plan the next part of your journey.
