AlUla Is Bigger Than It Looks
AlUla is one of the most exciting places to visit in Saudi Arabia, with ancient tombs, desert canyons, an old mud-brick town and world-class resorts. What surprises many first-time visitors is how spread out it is. The main sites are often many kilometres apart, along desert roads, and you cannot walk between them.
So before you book your trip, it is worth planning how you will get around AlUla.
How Far Apart Are the Main Sites?
Here is a simple overview of the places most visitors want to see:
- Hegra (Mada’in Salih): Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, with more than 100 Nabataean tombs. It lies about 20 km north of AlUla city.
- AlUla Old Town: the historic mud-brick town, with cafés and shops in the restored streets.
- Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil): the famous rock formation, best visited around sunset.
- Maraya: the mirrored concert hall in the Ashar Valley.
- Dadan and Jabal Ikmah: ancient sites with rock inscriptions, a short drive north of the Old Town.
- Harrat Viewpoint: a high viewpoint over the valley.
- Resorts: many hotels and resorts are outside the town, in valleys such as Ashar.
A day of sightseeing usually means several drives between your hotel and the sites, so transport is part of every plan.
Arriving at AlUla Airport
AlUla International Airport (ULH) is outside the town, and most hotels are around half an hour or more away by road, depending on where you stay. Some resorts arrange transfers for their guests, so check with your hotel first. If not, book your airport transfer before you land, so a car is waiting when you arrive.

Your Options for Getting Around AlUla
1
Renting a Car
Self-driving gives you freedom, and the main roads are good. But you need to be comfortable with desert roads and driving after dark, as many visitors stay out for sunset and dinner. You also need to find your way to each site and handle parking.
2
Hotel and Resort Transport
Some resorts offer shuttles or transfers. This is convenient, but it usually follows the hotel’s schedule, not yours.
3
Private Chauffeur by the Hour or Day
With a private chauffeur, a driver stays with you for the hours you choose. You go from your resort to the Old Town, on to Elephant Rock for sunset and back to your hotel after dinner, without worrying about directions, parking or driving at night.
Good for: families, couples, VIP guests, photographers and business visitors.
Visiting Hegra
Hegra is visited with a ticket booked in advance through the official Experience AlUla platform. Check the official website for the current tour options, timings and where tours start. Your driver can take you to the meeting point and pick you up when your tour ends.
